On this tour you will step into medieval Chester in the year 1403, when King Henry IV faced a serious challenge from Henry ‘Hotspur’ Percy and his allies Owain Glyndwr and the Earl of Douglas. Authentically dressed medieval soldiers will lead you through the city as they relate the story of the rebellion, explaining the events and the reasons that pushed Hotspur into conflict with the King. The emphasis will be on the story of the rebellion rather than on sightseeing alone.
As you move through Chester, you will hear about what life was like for soldiers based in the city, with particular attention to the famous Cheshire longbowmen who once served as bodyguards to the crown. Along the way a medieval archer will point out notable sites such as the Chester walls, Chester’s medieval Rows and some of the remaining buildings of medieval Chester. By the end of the tour you will understand how the rebellion affected Chester and its wider significance for Britain today.
