This tour will take you through Yanaka, a charming neighbourhood that keeps a quieter, nostalgic side of Tokyo. The area survived the Great Kanto Earthquake and Fire of 1923 and was spared the Allied fire bombings during WWII, so many traditional streets and buildings remain. As you move through the tiny side streets south of Nippori Station, you will notice a range of crafts still produced locally — textiles, ink prints, wood carvings, traditional foods, stationery, pottery, jewellery and more.

Along the way you will have the chance to try local street snacks and to stop by shops that are over 100 years old. You will see local shrines and temples and enjoy a regional, seasonal lunch. The tour will end with a traditional tea ceremony served with wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets). By the end of the tour you will have sampled a variety of Japanese dishes and drinks enjoyed by locals and gained a clearer sense of Yanaka’s enduring, small‑town atmosphere within Tokyo.
