At Meru National Park you’ll explore one of Kenya’s prime wilderness areas for rhino spotting. The park’s Rhino Sanctuary is, at last count, home to 34 black and 70 white rhinos, so encounters with these animals form a central part of the experience. Along the way you may learn about the park’s conservation work and its role in protecting these species.
The park is also famously associated with Elsa the Lioness and the film Born Free. That 1966 Technicolor British drama starred Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers as Joy and George Adamson, the real-life couple who raised Elsa from an orphaned cub. As you move through Meru, you may also see cheetah, hippo, zebra, giraffe, hartebeest, oryx, oribi and waterbuck, together with abundant birdlife. The mix of wildlife and the park’s cultural links create a varied, memorable visit to this distinctive Kenyan landscape.
