In Cholula you will sense a strong pre‑Hispanic presence. The city was built on the foundations of a large indigenous metropolis that was inhabited for thousands of years. Hernán Cortés famously remarked on the number of teocalis, imagining one could pray in a different temple every day of the year; today Cholula still surprises with 37 churches standing on and around those ancient sites. While Novohispano art appears elsewhere in all its splendour, here the older indigenous traditions remain very visible.
As you move through the streets you will learn about the role of the Tlacuilo, the indigenous scribe and painter, who created landmark works such as the Mural of the Drinkers and the exuberant decorative programme of Santa María Tonantzintla. The visit includes the majestic San Francisco Acatepec Temple, where you can admire the incredible façade covered in Talavera pieces. Along the way you will also see local factories that continue to produce Talavera using traditional processes, offering a direct link between Cholula’s living crafts and its deep historical roots.
