This small-group walking tour wanders through Amsterdam’s UNESCO World Heritage Canal Belt with an engaging storyteller who brings centuries of LGBTQ+ history to life. You will explore some of the city’s most beautiful neighbourhoods and learn how LGBTQ+ Amsterdammers have been part of the fabric of the city long before the 20th century.
The tour starts at the nightlife hub of Rembrandtplein and moves to iconic spots along the Canal Belt, including the Homomonument, which was groundbreaking when it was unveiled and remains a place of both celebration and mourning. Along the way you will hear a wide range of stories: a 17th-century lesbian love triangle, a 17th-century intersex soldier, a 19th-century bisexual ruler and a 21st-century drag queen. These personal histories and wider social contexts are woven together to give a fuller sense of Amsterdam and its LGBTQ+ community. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of the people who shaped the city and a stronger sense of its long, complex history.
