You’ll travel from the Willits valley floor up to the highest point on the rail line, enjoying changing views as the route climbs. Along the way you’ll pass through Tunnel #2 and descend into the redwood-thick Noyo River Canyon, a distinctive ecological area and an opportunity to discover the famous redwood giants of Mendocino County.
The train pauses briefly at Crowley, where you can get off to take in the views and see one of the oldest and most iconic trees on the route: the Wolf Tree. It’s named for a large growth on one side — woodsmen call such trees “wolf trees” because they tend to choke out smaller trees and underbrush. The trip to Crowley is made aboard one of the railway’s historic Diesel-Electric engines, adding a touch of rail history to the experience.
